PARIS Wireless chip company ST-Ericsson NV (Geneva, Switzerland) has appointed Gilles Delfassy, a respected expert in the wireless industry, as president and CEO of the company, effective Nov. 2.
In the meantime, ST-Ericsson said that Alain Dutheil joined the company's board of directors and resumed his position as ST's chief operating officer. He will work with Delfassy over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.
Moreover, Hans Vestberg, CFO and incoming CEO of Ericsson, and a member of the Board of ST-Ericsson, has become chairman of the Board of ST-Ericsson, succeeding Carl-Henric Svanberg, president and CEO of Ericsson.
Delfassy commented: "Being part of a successful and growing business has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Now I have the honor to lead ST-Ericsson from its early stages to what I believe can be profitable growth and true market leadership. I look forward to working with the management team and all of ST-Ericsson's talented employees to build on the excellent work started by Alain."
Delfassy worked for 28 years at Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) and most recently held the position of ex-senior vice president and head of TI' wireless terminals unit. Under his leadership, TI developed the OMAP platform, which enables multimedia on cell phones thereby broadening wireless capability beyond voice.
After he retired from TI in 2007, Delfassy became an advisor to many high-tech companies and served on several corporate boards.
At the end of July, ST-Ericsson announced that a number of executives were leaving the company or taking new positions, under a re-organization unveiled at the same time as the second quarter financial results.
