Challenged to develop a miniature voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with comparable performance to larger packages, Crystek Crystals Corp. has launched its smallest VCO package. Measuring 0.25 x 0.25 x 0.079 in. (6.35 x 6.35 x 2.0 mm), the tiny CVCO25 oscillator provides excellent electrical performance, and generates frequencies from 100 MHz to 1 GHz. Higher frequency capability is under development.

AVX Corp.'s new series of multi-layer varistors (MLVs) are designed for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection requirements in automotive applications. Designated the CANBus series varistor, the new surface-mount device can offer a significant space savings by replacing three components — two back-to-back zener diodes and an EMC capacitor in parallel — typically used to protect against transient voltage spikes.

Tyco Electronics, a business segment of Tyco International Ltd., has introduced enhanced-design singlemode SC connectors that optimize performance on 1.6-mm to 2.0-mm cable. SC connectors were originally designed for 3.00-mm cable. These redesigned 1.6-mm SC connectors also incorporate a unique six-position tuning feature that optimizes fiber alignment and performance. The new connectors have been tested to Telcordia GR-326, Issue 3; Service Life-Part A, using standard match-cladding fiber.
