Memory chip company Micron has confirmed that it has signed a definitive "sponsor agreement" to acquire and support Japan's Elpida for $2.5 billion. Micron said it will also buy a 24 percent share of Taiwanese DRAM fab Rexchip from Powerchip Technology Corp. for approximately $334 million.

China and the United States are the two countries most likely to come up with "disruptive technology breakthroughs" with a global impact in the next two to four years, according to a survey conducted by auditor and consultancy KPMG.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
