The United States Census Bureau estimates world population will grow to 9 billion by 2042, up 50 percent from 6 billion in 1999. The population counter on the bureau's Web site indicates an estimated net gain in world population--after excluding deaths--of between 100 and 150 people every minute. In the U.S., a birth takes place every 8 seconds and a death every 12 seconds. Throw in one [net] migrant every 30 seconds and the U.S. population expands by one individual every 13 seconds.

The electronics market is sputtering to a weak end this year, reflecting events in the general economy, where retailers and manufacturers are struggling with sluggish demand.

All the signs point to listless end-of-year retail sales, according to economists, who note that recent declines in gasoline prices--which typically translate into higher available-to-spend money for consumers--have this time failed to spark robust spending in other segments of the economy.

Den 14 november var en bra dag för den norska Siemens-koncernen. Då fick företaget besked från Justis- och politidepartementet att den enda kvarvarande konkurrenten om räddningsnätsleveranserna,EADS, är ute ur bilden. Siemens är därmed inne i slutförhandlingar om ett utbyggnadskontrakt som representerar ett värde på 3,6 miljarder kronor.
