Looking to bring cohesion to its distributed operations, engineering and supply-chain executives at Cisco Systems Inc. hope to hammer out a set of three-year road maps by the summer for the microprocessors, memories, ASICs and other technologies they intend to use. The road maps will offer guidelines both for designing Cisco products and forging vendor relationships.

Satellite network operator Globalstar has been forced to restart discussions with potential investors after its creditors rejected a proposed rescue operation led by New Valley Corp. The $55 million deal put together three weeks ago by New Valley, would have given the Miami-based investor group a controlling stake in Globalstar (San Jose, Calif.), but was rejected by the company's creditors as not being high enough. NEW TRIPOLI, Pennsylvania --- The market for 300-mm wafer front-end equipment will be $7.8 billion in 2003, according to a report from The Information Network, a market research company based here. The report says it will grow even faster in 2004, by 58%, to reach a value of $12.3 billion.

A group of researchers at Cornell University perforated the top layer of a chip with two million "holes" that serve as nanoscale waveguides for a 488-nanometer laser, allowing them to film individual molecules during chemical reactions.

Jazz Semiconductor Inc. and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (ASMC) have formed a silicon manufacturing venture to which Jazz will contribute mixed-signal and radio-frequency (RF) technologies, including bipolar CMOS and silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS technology. In turn ASMC will provide capacity at its recently completed 200-mm wafer fabrication facility in Shanghai.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. gave dates for the launch of its family of 64-bit processors today (January 31, 2003). The company said the Athlon 64 and Mobile Athlon 64 processors would not launch until September of 2003 whereas the 64-bit Opteron processor would be introduced to the market on April 22 in New York.

BILLERICA, Mass. --- Mykrolis Corp. fourth quarter revenues were $46.5 million, a 3% decline from $47.7 million in the third quarter of 2002 and a 28% increase from the comparable quarter a year ago. The company recorded a net loss of $8.2 million compared to a net loss of $14.5 million a year before.
