COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Broadcom Corp. has offered $62 million in cash for LVL7 Systems Inc., one of the few remaining independent developers of middleware for networking protocols. Given LVL7's existing integration deals with Agere, Infineon Technologies, Marvell Technology, Vitesse Semiconductor, Fulcrum Microsystems and Switchcore, the Broadcom move could prompt some scrambling in the communications IC sector.

LONDON — Royal Philips Electronics is selling its 24.8 percent stake in FEI Co, a supplier of tools such as scanning electron microscopes to semiconductor and nanotechnology device makers. FEI, which is headquartered in Hillsboro, Oregon, filed a registration statement on Form S-3 with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Thursday (Nov.30) relating to the planned secondary offering of 8,406,007 common shares.

Lowering the entry cost for a PXI-based test system, National Instruments is rolling out a PXI chassis with integrated remote controller. The chassis provides five peripheral slots, and includes a host card to control the system from either a desktop or laptop. It can achieve up to 110-Mbytes/s sustained throughput to the PC host.
