MIPS are expensive on a host CPU; memory is expensive on a dedicated DSP. Author Jeffrey Barish of EuPhonics discusses the tradeoffs between host processing and DSP processing as well as general purpose vs. fixed function DSPs. While the specifics are sound-based, the principles are generic.
