Synopsys gets behind VCX as group demos online tools

The Virtual Component Exchange (VCX), a not-for-profit industry organization seeking to streamline the business and legal aspects of licensing intellectual property (IP) cores, is due to demonstrate the first prototypes of its online tools next week at the IP99 Europe conference and exhibition. The group will also announce the addition of six member companies to its roster, including EDA leader Synopsys Inc.

MIPS Technologies Inc. said that SandCraft Inc. has received a comprehensive intellectual property (IP) license to use the MIPS32 and MIPS64 processor architectures in its own processor designs.

Representatives from the EDA, intellectual property (IP), and semiconductor industries gathered at Wescon 99 to discuss new methods for protecting silicon intellectual property, which the panel called a significant but largely ignored topic.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
