It's not just for test anymore: Recent extensions to JTAG not only enhance its test coverage, but also make it useful for design as well, says this National Semiconductor technologist. Suppliers of CPLD's and FPGA's were quick to support IEEE 1532 standard for Boundary-Scan-based In-System-Configuration of programmable devices. Now designers have a way to develop flexible systems where functionality can be adapted to a specific customer or application, he says.

Asynchronous mode allows users to run the secondary bus at a frequency that is not derived from the primary bus, thus providing far greater support for next generation PCI bus designs. Asynchronous mode support is significant as customers engineer newer faster designs that need to merge with slower legacy devices, Pericom says.

Lattice Semiconductor Corporation and Tyco Electronics announced the demonstration and interoperability of Lattice's XPIOTM 110GXS physical layer electronic transceiver with Tyco Electronics' FR-4 backplane and High-Speed long cables. The demonstration utilized Lattice's XPIO 110GXS 16-bit, 9.953 to 10.709 Gbps transceivers and Tyco's HM-Zd based QuadRouteTM backplane and ZFP-I/O high speed cables in conjunction with passive equalizer and active equalizer device.

Antenna for 2.4-GHz wireless LANs debuts

Pacific Wireless has introduced an omnidirectional, extended-range "rubber duck" antenna for wireless LANs operating at 2.4 GHz and meeting the 802.11 standard. The Model IN24-5RD provides a 5.5-dBi gain rather than the industry-standard 2.2 dBi, thus doubling the signal strength for WLAN communications, the company said. It provides a 360 degrees horizontal transmission pattern and a 50 degrees vertical transmission pattern.
