Among the different technologies proposed to solve the existing bottleneck in access networks, fiber-optic transmission has a special importance. Passive Optical Networks (PONs) appear to be among the more attractive architectures to be used in an Optical Access Network (OAN). Cristina Romero and associates present the main guidelines for the design of the Optical Network Unit (ONU) to be installed at the customer premises as required by this type of Fiber To The Home (FTTH) network.

InfiniBand networks are emerging as an important technology for server clustering and may form the infrastructure for next-generation enterprise-computing systems. IBM's Dr. Casimer DeCusatis describes how InfiniBand can be used in this environment, including experimental results of a testbed using clustered servers, storage, and peripheral devices.
