Challenged to develop a miniature voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with comparable performance to larger packages, Crystek Crystals Corp. has launched its smallest VCO package. Measuring 0.25 x 0.25 x 0.079 in. (6.35 x 6.35 x 2.0 mm), the tiny CVCO25 oscillator provides excellent electrical performance, and generates frequencies from 100 MHz to 1 GHz. Higher frequency capability is under development.

AVX Corp.'s new series of multi-layer varistors (MLVs) are designed for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection requirements in automotive applications. Designated the CANBus series varistor, the new surface-mount device can offer a significant space savings by replacing three components — two back-to-back zener diodes and an EMC capacitor in parallel — typically used to protect against transient voltage spikes.

Supporting legacy and next-generations designs, One Stop Displays offers a new 8.4-in. thin-film-transistor (TFT) display with a smart 6-bit TTL interface that can adjust to resolution requirements. Designed for satellite applications, Aeroflex Colorado Springs, an Aeroflex Inc. company, says its radiation-hardened RadClock family of PLL-based clock generators is the first space-qualified solution that solves clock network design problems in aerospace applications with a single chip. Providing automotive design engineers with a source of instant heat for cabin air, engine fluids and other automotive applications, TT electronics IRC Wirewound & Film Technologies Division has developed a tubular aluminum substrate resistive technology that delivers tightly controlled "instant on" heat with greater than 95% efficiency. The new Anotherm series inline heaters, based on the new technology, can also serve as a voltage drop source for daylight running lamps and fan speed controls.

A joint development effort between Seiko Epson Corp. and NGK Insulators, Ltd. has resulted in the development of the industry's smallest gyro-sensor, according to both companies. Measuring 5.0 x 3.2 x 1.3 mm, the new surface-mount gyro-sensor, designated the XV-3500CB, represents Epson's first product line expansion beyond the scope of its quartz crystal business.

Expecting to replace traditional 32 kHz crystals in microprocessor and microcontroller-based systems, Micro Oscillator, Inc. (MOI) says its new all-silicon CMOS-based clock oscillator will match the performance of 32 kHz crystals. The key benefit of the new device is its integration capability. However, it has not been proved out in silicon . . . yet. The good news is with MOI's performance track record in the MHz range, there's almost no doubt it can deliver the target spec.

CTS Corp. (Elkhart, Ind.) has filed suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Korea-based Partron Co. Ltd. and its U.S. distributor, Samnova A/S of Denmark, for producing and selling ceramic monoblock duplexers that infringe one or more of CTS' ceramic duplexer filter patents.

Lumileds claims its new flash LEDs are the industry's smallest and brightest LEDs for camera phones. Offering the light output required by high-resolution CMOS camera modules, the new Luxeon Flash LXCL-PWF1 delivers 40 lumens at 1 ampere (A), and the LXCL-PWF2 LED provides 80 lumens at 1 A, which is about 12 times brighter than conventional LEDs that produce approximately 6 to 7 lumens.

Cornell Dubilier has received approval by the US Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) as a qualified provider of CLR79 and CLR81 wet-tantalum capacitors. The approval is for M-level reliability and voltage ranges from 25 Vdc to 125 Vdc. CLR79 is listed as MIL-C-39006/22 and CLR81 as MIL-C-39006/25.
