@Max: "I really wish I knew more about the audio side of things, but there's only so much time and there never seems to be enough"

Well, you may be in luck.  Rumor has it that the good old standard audio jack on Apple products may be going away in favor of a new digital interface.  Look here:

Remember, all signals are analog, even those that pose as digital. Ever hear of signal integrity? Now probably not given the pedesctrian speeds you work at. You should come to DesignCon, a digital deisgn conference that's really all analog.

@MeasurementBlues: Hmm maybe I can write an article comparing tone generator apps.

That woudl be great -- it woudl be a reall yuseful article -- do you need someone to copy edit it for you? LOL

@MeasurementBlues: It's an analog thing. I don't expect you to understand.

I prefer not to waste my interlect on the trivial and mundane, but instead use it as a beacon to light the lives of others in the much more demanding digital domain.

I think I know what your problem is...

... iPhones don't have hard drives :-)

@Max,

I suggest downloading a tone generator app, which hopefully will give you something close to a sine wave (another analog thing). I suggest checking the output on an oscilloscope set to give you at FFT (fast Fourier Transform for you digital folk). You should see the fundamental tone but you may see harmonics. Hmm maybe I can write an article comparing tone generator apps.

@Max,

The reason for keeping the volume down is to avoid clipping of the stereo amplifier's output. It's an analog thing. I don't expect you to understand. LOL ;-)

"aren't you feeling well?"

Not really, Having hours and hours of pain trying to recover data from iPhones after a hard drive crash. In spite of many good intentions, a little, but important data may have been  lost.

@MeasurementBlues: For optimal sound quality when using external speakers, set the iPod volume at less than half the maximum output and adjust your listening volume through your stereo controls.

Cool Beans -- good advice (that's not like you, aren't you feeling well? LOL :-)
