It's difficult to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) when sending voice, video, and data simultaneously over a converged IP network. There are software-based traffic management solutions, but the increasing consumer demand for triple play services really mandates a hardware implementation, because only hardware can satisfy the extreme speed requirements of leading-edge triple-play environments.
So I was very interested to hear about the new Virtex-4 FPGA-based Traffic Management Solution that's been developed by Xilinx and Modelware. This scalable solution can provide high-performance throughput support from 50 Mbps to 10+ Gbps, thereby allowing the solution to be used in high-end equipment such as metro core routers and in wired and wireless access equipment such as PON OLTs and WiMAX base stations.
Can you remember when FPGAs first appeared on the scene back in the early 1908s? The early offerings were somewhat limited to say the least. Who would have thought that they would have developed to the extent that we could be using them for this type of application? And what will they be capable of in 5, 10, and 15 year's time? (The mind boggles)
