OK, I know this sounds silly at first, but I just came across the LittleMissMatched website. Amongst a myriad other items, they sell triads of mismatched socks.
"Triads"? Yes, these socks come in groups of three that are carefully selected so as to not match each other in precisely the right way (I know we all have mismatched socks at home, but these are much more colorful and significantly more mismatched – Zaphod Beeblebrox would be proud to wear them).
So, with three socks you have three different permutations to play with, and then you could go further and mix-and-match from multiple sock-suites. Personally, I rather like the Kooky (56, 56, 58) collection, but I'm also tempted to the Kooky (74, 75, 76) suite (can you have a "suite" of socks?).
In all seriousness, I can think of loads of folks who would love these as a birthday present or as a "Christmas stocking stuffer" – in fact I'm compiling a list as we speak.
