Speaking of the "How Things Work" Yahoo group (see article #212501927), I just saw another interesting posting...
This was in relation to a "brain tickler" for puzzle fans from a 1932 issue of Modern Mechanix magazine. Well, the www.MakeZine.com site reproduced the original puzzle and illustrations with the title: Will these vehicles run? A puzzle from the past.
Of course, since this was the "How Things Work" group, you know you're not going to simply be presented with a URL. In this case, the link was accompanied with the following note:
I love the clarity of the illustrations! They were plainly done by somebody who understood the subjects being illustrated. More recently, I think it was Roger Hayward who did many excellent ones for The Amateur Scientist in Sci. Am. He was an expert stippler.
So now I need to learn more about Roger Hayward... and I'm wondering: "What's a stippler?"
