A cunning photographic effect; Skiing off the top of a cliff; Swedish dance bands from the 1970s; more...
Over the last few days, a number of friends have amused me with a selection of interesting websites that should tickle your fancy for a few minutes:
Hong Kong: First we have an image of Hong Kong. The clever thing about this is that it actually combines a number of images taken at different times of the day. By moving your mouse cursor up and down the screen you can go from daytime to nighttime views. This is a rather cunning effect:
As an aside, someone once told me that Hong Kong is the only place that when you get there it's just the same as you expected it to be. They were right. (This is unlike somewhere such as Las Vegas, your impression of which is formed by films, which almost invariably depict it at night – the daytime view is very different.)
Arrrgggghhh: In this video clip we see some base-jumping folks skiing off the top of a cliff and then parachuting to the ground ... you have to see it to believe it (this video doesn't auto-start – you have to click the play button):
As another aside, in my younger years I made three parachute jumps. I can still remember the feeling of throwing myself out of the plane's doorway... These were some of the most vivid experiences of my life. I would absolutely recommend everyone to try doing this at least once (but I for one don't particularly want to do it again :-)
Screen Cleaner: I'm sure you've seen something like this before, but it's still funny and this particular example is a jolly good one of the breed (pun intended):
Oldies but... If you were just thinking to yourself "I wonder where I can get to see pictures of Swedish dance bands from the 1970s?" then worry not, because I have you covered (did you ever doubt me?):
As the person who forwarded this link to me commented: "Gad, I remember the tight pants and the flowery shirts of the 70s (for guys), not to mention the British rock star hair, but I truly don't remember it being quite that bad. Kind of Liberace-meets-grade eight-sewing-class..."
It's hard to decide which one is the worst, although the "Teddy Boys" have to be up there close to the top... (what do you think?)
