I tell you, I've got so many things going on at the forthcoming Design West 2013 Conference and Exhibition that I don’t know whether I'm coming or going. (Remember that Your FREE Design West Expo Pass is waiting for you!)
On Tuesday April 23 from 7:00 to 8:00am, for example, I will be hosting and moderating a "Shop Talk" session titled The Internet of Things: Boon or Bane of Society? Yes, I know it's early, but I have been promised that bacon and/or coffee will be served.
Of course the world is a harsh place, and they (the ones who don the undergarments of authority and stride the corridors of power) may have been lying about the bacon in order to get me to say yes… but even the faintest hope of bacon is enough to drag me out of bed.
Now, there has been much talk in recent times about the Internet of Things (IoT), which is a term used to describe nearly ubiquitous connectivity of distributed sensor networks and intelligent agents.
We are just beginning to see the deployment of these devices, but before we plunge headfirst into the fray with gusto and abandon, perhaps we should pause to draw breath and ask ourselves just why we are looking for such connectivity and what will it mean in our everyday lives? Will the IoT make our lives easier, or will it usher in the creation of Big Brother or even Skynet? (Click Here and then press the "Play" button to hear an appropriate sound of grim foreboding.)
But wait, there's more! "What, more?" you cry. "Yes, more!" I reply (why do I have to say everything twice?) Later that same morning, between 9:15 and 10:15am, my esteemed colleague David Blaza will be moderating a session titled What the Intelligent Systems/Internet of Things Boom means for the Embedded Market.
We are poised on the edge of great changes. In years to come, I think we will look back at this time and say to ourselves "How little we knew" and "Well, I certainly wasn't expecting what actually came to pass!"
I also think that this is a great time to attend conferences like Design West and get to hear what the experts think about this stuff. And you never know… there may even be some bacon!

where – in addition to my Max's Cool Beans
blogs on all sorts of "stuff" – you will find the latest and greatest design, technology, product, and news articles with regard to all aspects of designing and using microcontrollers.
Also, you can obtain a highlights update delivered directly to your inbox by signing up for my weekly newsletter – just Click Here
to request this newsletter using the Manage Newsletters tab (if you aren't already a member you'll be asked to register, but it's free and painless so don't let that stop you [grin]).
Last but certainly not least, make sure you check out all of the discussions and other information resources at All Programmable Planet
. For example, in addition to blogs by yours truly, microcontroller expert Duane Benson is learning how to use FPGAs to augment (sometimes replace) the MCUs in his robot (and other) projects.
