Don't you have chips in your debit and credit cards already for normal transactions by physical contact through the gold pads on the card, rather than just the magnetic stripe (which is almost obsolete here in the UK and Europe)? If so, then zapping the chip would prevent you using it for normal chip'n'PIN transactions. Sheilding would have to be in the wallet, or else you'd need to make it removable to access the chip contacts.
