Set your Tivos for the public television documentary "A Car is Born" hosted by the dean of the Detroit auto press corps, John McElroy. He's host of the PBS and Speedtv series Autoline Detroit and one of the most knowledgeable and personable members of the automotive press. The program debuts in Detroit on WTVS on Tuesday, November 8 (9 p.m.), so keep an eye out on your local PBS outlet shortly thereafter.
The program shows, from a historical perspective, how the car development process has evolved from hand drawings and clay modeling to the high-tech digital world of product lifecycle management. While those of us in the industry are aware of its modern technology resources, "Most people have no idea of the process it takes to bring a new car to market. Fewer still are aware of how high-tech this process has become. This program will obliterate forever the misperception that the auto industry is a technological laggard," says McElroy.
