The "Great Race" may not be the Indy or Daytona 500 but hybrids racing around the world in 80 days!
I just received a press release about the Great Race. No not the Daytona 500 or the Indy, but Great Race 2008a 'round-the-world competition that will feature hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles.
This race kicks off on February 12, 2008 in New York City, the hundredth anniversary of its namesake race, which was staged to prove the viability of the then-new automobile. The 2008 time and endurance competition will run 22,000 miles (35,500 km) in 80 days and follow much of the route of the first raceto San Francisco, ferrying across the Pacific to Shanghai, and ending up in Paris.
A top finish will require fuel efficiency, endurance under harsh conditions, and automotive rally skill. All in all, the race should be a good test for hybrids' and alternative fuel vehicles' robustnessprovided the appropriate fuel can be made available along the entire route.
Let your fellow readers know your thoughts on the value of such a race in "improving the breed" of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles by going to our Forums page.
