Honda drops Accord hybrid, but clean diesel to debut.
It may seem counter intuitive at first look, but because of poor sales, Honda has scrapped the gasoline/electric hybrid version of its Accord mid-size sedan. The powertrain option won't be offered in the next generation Accord coming out for the 2008 model year.
According to Honda spokesman Chris Naughton, the company's clean diesel technology will be incorporated into unnamed models for sale in the U.S. in about two years timebut it should be safe to say that the Accord would be a prime candidate for the engine.
As reported from the SAE Congress in Detroit in April, Honda's clean diesel technology created quite a stir among engineers attending the meeting. The technology uses a catalytic converter that "creates" its own ammonia to cut NOx emissions without the use of a separate urea source, as with Mercedes BlueTec diesel engines.
