Max Maxfield is gloating and whispering, "My precious" over his new wallet from Saddleback Leather.
A week or so ago, I realized that my wallet had seen better days. In reality, it had done the best it could and given its all, considering it was just a cheap and cheerful thing I'd picked up somewhere on my travels. I may be a bit of a sentimental softy, but I realized that the time had come for us to part ways before the poor ragamuffin fell to pieces in my pocket.
This tired old fellow has seen better days.
At that time, by some strange quirk of fate, the celebration of my decision to favor this world with my presence was fast approaching. In fact, this very day -- as I pen these words -- is the 36th anniversary of my 21st birthday. Thus it was that I decided to treat myself to a brand-spanking new repository for my credit cards and associated paraphernalia.
Now, as you may know, I am a huge fan of Saddleback Leather, not the least because it boasts a 100 Year Warranty: "If, for any reason, your piece doesn't live up to what we said it would, then contact us or have one of your descendants get ahold of one of my descendants and we'll take care of you."
I'm already the proud processor of Saddleback's Tow Belt,
iPad Case, and -- the pride of my collection -- Messenger Bag. My friend Brian LaGrave always drools over my Messenger Bag when he comes to visit my office. (I spend hours cleaning up the mess after he's gone.) I take it everywhere with me, though I have to admit that I am casting a covetous eye toward the Squared Backpack. Maybe I will treat myself on the 29th anniversary of my 21st birthday.
The great thing about all these items is that you only have to buy each one once, if you see what I mean. I am firmly convinced that each one will last me for the rest of my life.
When it came to upgrading my wallet, my first thought was to root around the Saddleback Leather website. It turns out that Saddleback has a wide variety of wallets and pouches. The one that caught my eye was the Long Trifold Wallet.
Ah, that new leather smell...
While I was ordering this little beauty, I also purchased a few more bottles of Saddleback's Chamberlain Leather Milk Liniment. This stuff is wonderful for keeping your leather soft, pliable, and healthy with natural oils. Every now and then, I will spend an hour or so at the weekend sitting on our back porch replenishing my various items of leather. But I digress.
My new wallet has arrived. Hurray! I just spent a happy few minutes emptying my old wallet and my pockets and transferring everything over. In addition to credit cards and suchlike, the new version holds my checkbook, loose change, and a few other essential items.
For the first time in ages, I actually know where everything is.
Now, this isn't small at 7 1/4 inches wide, 3 3/4 inches high, and 3/4 inch thick, and it certainly makes a bit of bulge in one's short's pocket. (I'm currently resplendent in my cargo shorts and Hawaiian shirt.) But that only complements and balances the other heroic bulges we find down there (keys, paperback books, tools... why, what were you thinking? Get your mind out of the gutter, for goodness sake.)
Meanwhile, for those times when I want to travel light, I'm contemplating a Saddleback Belt Pouch. These little scamps are currently out of stock (sad face), but I'm informed they should become available in the next week or so (happy face), until which time I shall await in appetent anticipation.
