The "mix in" was invented at Steve's Ice Cream in Somerville, Mass. The idea was you pick you flavor, then pic your "mix in" such as M&Ms. The server would then mis the M&Ms into the ice cream and put it on a cone or in a cup.

It's arguable over who invented Oreo ice cream, but we here say it was invented at Emack & Bolios, another local ice cream chain.

I can't say that I did -- but then I have no idea what a "mix-in" is (how many people does one involve and what's the dress code?)

@Max,

Did you know that the mix-in was invented in Boston? It seems to have gone out of style by now.

@Jimelectr: ...Now don't go all ice-cream-snob on me and look down your noses about B-R!

I wouldn't dream of it -- in fact Gina and I just got back from a quick Handel's run -- I had a four-scoop sampler (vanilla, black cherry, strawberry, and chocolate). I'm sorry to say that I've never tried Baskin Robins -- but I hope to one day (preferably on the 31st LOL)

it's rather ironic that I read this today, 3/31/17, as it's the 31st of the month, and Baskin-Robins has $1.31 scoops today (and on every 31st [January, March, May, July, August, October, and December]).  Now don't go all ice-cream-snob on me and look down your noses about B-R!

My mom says...

Just after I'd posted this column yesterday afternoon I sent a link to it to my dear old mom in England. Later that evening she replied as follows:

Dearest Clive, Thanks very much for making my day.  Not only was your article funny, but when I was little, the attic at Artisan View [the street where they lived] was my brother's bedroom and also the room where several family "treasures" were stored. One day I discovered an old wind-up gramophone amongst these treasures and searched until I found a record. It just had one song on it and I used to play it on every occasion that I visited the attic. You might have guessed what that record was. Yes, it was "I scream for ice-cream". And I thought it was magical.  Your article brought back many fond memories. Thanks. I'll retire to my bed in a lovely mood.

Good grief -- what are the odds? Sometimes i think I'm living in a Dirk Gently world where everything is interconnected.

Oooh -- we're planning on visiting Savannah for Gina's birthday -- we will sample Leopold's offerings and report back later.

I am a bit of an ice-cream nut. It seems that I tour the world eating trying out the local offering. I think the best I ever had was in the south of France, where each little town had a tastier selection than the previous.

Notwithstanding that, up with the best of them were the ice creams (I went back several times) at Leopold's in Savannah, Georgia
