I don’t know about you, but my biggest challenge in this industry has always been trying to persuade people that hardware is sexy.
It’s as if people outside of the engineering realm just expect hardware to work seamlessly, without giving a second thought to the difficulties, challenges and intricacies of making it. As if no blood, sweat and tears went into creating the engineering masterpiece on a chip.
Instead, people save their glowing, gushing admiration for the software that sits on top. “Oh, hey, have you seen my new Facebook app?” Wow. Sheesh.
That’s why I’m on a bit of a mission, lately, to bring sexy back to hardware. To make the softies sit up and pay attention when we chat about chips. To make people realize that if you want to talk about attractive augmentation, it’s all about the silicon.
Recently, I brought my crusade to MLove, a confestival in Germany, where some of the brightest minds in the mobile space congregate to discuss trends and the future.
Below is a video of my session on mobile chips, and why the silicon is the pizza crust on top of which everything else, OS sauce levels, application toppings etc is built.
Bear in mind, it’s not aimed at a technical audience, just a bit of a taster session to whet people’s appetites for more. Enjoy!
