Well, I am back from Austin, the place that likes to think it is weird, to Portland, which is totally weird and at this point I decree that Portland should be given the crown and Austin should stop trying to be the defender of it. And while we are talking about weird, how about this patent. It is not a totally over designed product, as was the case with last week’s candidate, but just crazy to think that this patent would have been issued. People have had pets for as long as civilization has existed I suspect and have always needed a way to make sure that some of those, and the food source that happens to be on two or four legs did not get away. We normally call those things collars and tethers or leashes. So who would have thought that such an arrangement for a snake would have been novel in any way! Well, clearly the inventor who says:
One with skill in the art of collaring and tethering techniques for legged animals will appreciate the functional dif?culties of applying known tethering techniques to snakes and that further innovation and engineering is required as was taught herein in this speci?cation to enable successful practice of collaring and tethering of any species of snake for recreational walking of the animal.
I can see the problem given that many people do not like touching snakes, but I am not sure who knowing how to collar a legged animal would make one things that there is a problem doing the same for a snake – except that snakes are normally tapered and surprisingly this invention never talks about that. Just in case you were wondering, this patent is not an old one, it was issues in 2002 (6,490,999). Let’s move onto the description.
A collar for collaring a snake has an elongated collar section forming a physical collar when wrapped around the body portion of the snake.
How many times can we use the word collar in a single section and indeed use the word to describe what it is, how it is used and the form of its construction.
The collar further has a support section for supporting an attachment mechanism for accepting attachment of a tether and a connector system comprising at least two components af?xed to strategic portions of the collar section for securing the collar in place around the body portion of the snake. The length of the collar section is such that a portion thereof overlaps itself when ?tted around the snake providing an adjustable interface containing separate components of the connector system whereby mating the connector components together secures the collar in place on the snake.
And there we have a totally overkill statement, for an abstract, to say that the collar is adjustable and that a leash can be attached to it.
