Current rankings of 8, 16 and 32bit processor use by the readers of Embedded Systems Design and EETimes are shown in this webinar, along with OS preferences and designchallenges. Well worth a look: http://www.techonline.com/learning/webinar/216500641

Buy Zilog ha ha ha ha .... oh, you were serious.... If TI wants to be a player in Microcontrollers, they either need to buy significant market share (i.e. Atmel), or buy significant technology (Luminary), that they can effectively leverage with their large organization and/or leverage with complimentary IP. Zilog brings neither market share nor significant (from a potential market share standpoint) technology. It would make little sense and would likely be more effort than ever worth to manage historical customer expectations. Not sure I would completely rule out Freescale as a purchase. There is more complimentary than competitive, especially when you look at where each other is a clear leader.

TI will start to climb in the rankings by attrition alone. With the "Japan Semi Inc." consolidation, they should move up two places to sixth. Acquiring Atmel and/or Zilog could add another rung on the ladder. Infineon, NXP and Freescale aren't in great shape either and we could see a merger or sell off within the next 12 months. TI could end up as number 3 by this time next year very easily.

Zilog is an interesting idea. Any other thoughts in MCU land?

I hadn't thought of the idea, but buyng Zilog is an excellent idea. They have products (and not much else) to put TI squarely into the 8-bit business.

You must be a Zilog employee. I don't think anyone else knows Zilog still exists.. Good luck selling what's left

TI should buy Zilog. They've got a few good cores and chips that with a little focus and direction could compete well. The cost to buy them would be a rounding error to TI.
