Is Wi-Fi the wireless equivalent of the Swiss army knife?
Sometimes one would think so. Wi-Fi seems to be everywhere and aspiring, at least, to do practically everything.
But is it really the best choice for city-wide wireless networks? Muni Wi-Fi, as it has come to be known, has serious multipath limitations unless it's augmented by MIMO technology. MIMO is a possibility but it is also expensive.
My guess now is: Muni Wi-Fi is going to get off the ground slowly; its performance will be disappointing; it will not be free; and it will not make the cities that deploy it rich. In fact, it will give them a long-term headache.
I am not alone in holding these opinions. If you would like to read more, try these recently published articles on WirelessNetDesignline.
