The results are in from sunny Sophia Antipolis, France (a short hop from or to the Cannes Film Festival). Several mobile WiMAX vendors have had their equipment tested for interoperability under the auspices of the WiMAX Forum.
Many passed the test.
The products haven't been certified yet but the interoperability testing is a clear sign that WiMAX is moving forward.
Other recent news is a bit more unsettling. Motorola announced its belief, for example, that WiMAX is not a good backhaul technology (I have often heard that backhaul was one of WiMAX's more important applications). Also, those pesky frequency allocation issues in different geographical regions won't go away.
So as I've said many times before, we'll just have to wait and see what happens to this technology. My bet is still that WiMAX will be adopted where cellular has not yet taken root but will falter when it tries to displace 3G cellular.
