You may have already heard about this but it is news to me. Sprint Nextel is going to call its WiMAX network Xohm.
There is something about the "X factor" that appeals to the executives there. On the other hand, they may just be running the name up the flagpole to see if anybody salutes.
The name certainly fits into my thoughts about WiMAXthat since Sprint-Nextel is lagging the other cellular carriers it wants to make a quantum leap and a new technology might be just the ticket.
I wish them luck. As a broadband overlay to the existing cellular network, it makes some sense. But the analysts who fail to take into account the technology roadmaps of cellular technology are comparing apples to oranges.
But WiMAX will find a place in the grand scheme of wireless things. Silicon solutions are impressive. So impressive, in fact, that I've begun to summarize them in an ongoing series.
