I'm happy to report that an unbiased performance test is being coordinated by industry expert Fanny Mlinarsky, a highly-regarded consultant with more than 24 years of senior R&D expertise in wireless technologies.
With a trickle of Ultrawideband (UWB) products available in stores now and a slew of new arrivals slated for the holiday buying season, the time is ripe for independent, comprehensive testing of UWB systemsand the chips that drive them.
I'm happy to report that just such an unbiased performance test is being coordinated by industry expert Fanny Mlinarsky, a highly-regarded consultant with more than 24 years of senior R&D expertise in wireless technologies.
Test results will be published exclusively in TechOnline's WirelessNetDesignLine as well as on its sister site EE Times.com.
Mlinarsky is president of octoScope, a Boston area consultancy. She is also the founder of Azimuth Systems, a test company specializing in wireless technologies. In August she published a three-part analysis of IEEE 802.11n systems: Testing Draft IEEE 802.11n systems: Not all "n" is created equal
Results of the UWB test are likely to be just as engaging.
All companies with UWB systems or chips are invited to participate in the test, which will begin October 6 and continue through mid-November. A comprehensive test plan is available by contacting Mlinarsky at email@example.com .
At this time, the test's sole sponsor is Pulse-Link, www.pulselink.net, a UWB chip company with products for wireless HDTV distribution in the home. Other companies are welcome to participate at the sponsorship level, says Mlinarsky.
System-level UWB products, UWB chips sets, and reference designs are presently being assembled prior to the actual testing. Chip companies, in particular, are invited to contact Mlinarsky to assure that their latest silicon, reference design, and software is used in the test.
With the results of this test, WirelessNetDesignline will be the first to publish unbiased performance data on multimedia applications, including high definition video and high fidelity audio transport.
Throughput claims from UWB vendors range up to 1 Gbps but such claims are difficult to substantiate because they are highly dependent on test methodology, says Mlinarsky.
An open competitive test that uses consistent test methods to measure and compare the performance of UWB products should be of great value to both design engineers and the end-user community.
The octoScope test of UWB products will focus on transport performance and video quality over wireless and coaxial media and will measure:
- Throughput and packet loss under optimum conditions
- Throughput and packet loss as a function of distance and channel imperfections
- Video quality
Mlinarsky is President at octoScope, a Boston area consulting firm working with technology companies on RF and wireless product and system architecture, performance analysis and test. In 2001 she founded Azimuth Systems, the leading provider of Wi-Fi test equipment, and served as the company's CTO for five years.
She spent over 24 years in senior R&D positions developing datacom and network test products with companies including Hewlett Packard, Agilent Technologies, Teradyne and Concord Communications. Fanny is active in the development of industry standards and is the founder of IEEE 802.11 TGT committee defining test metrics and methods. Fanny holds BS/EE and BA/CS from Columbia University and has been awarded 4 patents.
