Perhaps one of the most anticipated events at Mobile World Congress in February will be NXP Semiconductor's demonstration of a software-defined radio implementation.
What we know now is available at NXP powers ahead with programmable LTE modem.
According to NXP executive Marc Cetto, the modem will "support the entire GSM family of standards, right through to LTE." NXP also claims its solution will exact negligible penalties in power and chip area.
This sounds like it could be a disruptive technology to me. But before we get too excited about it, we should remember that other companies are working on SDR solutions as well, although I would bet that few of them have the global reach of NXP.
