MCI has announced that it is accelerating the roll out of its wholesale VoIP product suite. According to an article published today, customer demand caused MCI to move up the availability of its VoIP products.
The article goes on to say the service is aimed at two different sets of customers: carrier-class IP termination for service providers and their customers and a SIP Gateway service for end users. IP termination is aimed at customers that already have media gateways. The SIP Gateway service is available to 54% of MCI's U.S.residential and business customers.
This is great news for SIP. Wholesaling SIP gateway service is a fantasitc idea. Though I'm not so sure why it's only available to 54% of customers…are they the ones that don't have SIP Gateways? Whatever the case may be, I'd certainly look for other telcos to follow MCI's lead on this one.
