I just read that Aclatel has shipped it's 70 millionth DSL line. In the article Alcatel claims its DSL market leadership is based on its Intelligent Services Access Manager solutions.
While I'm sure that's true, the company's market leadership has its roots much farther back in DSL history. When Alcatel company won an RFP drawn up by three ILEC's that banded together to put an end to the constant bickering over the DSL standard. The RFP and Alcatel's leadership kept DSL from becoming another ISDN. I think it's safe to say that without Alcatel, DSL probably would not be a household name today.
Congrats on the milestone, Alcatel.
