Congratulations RIO--RapidIO Interconnect Specification 1.3 is now approved as a new ANSI standard. RapidIO technology is specifically developed to address the needs of equipment designers in the wireless infrastructure, edge networking, storage, scientific, military and industrial markets.
Accreditation by ANSI is important in that procedures used by the standards body in connection with the development of American National Standards meet the Institute's essential requirements for openness, balance, consensus and due process. The process includes consensus on a proposed standard by representatives from materially affected and interested parties as well as broad-based public review and comment on draft standards.
David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
