I came across a release the other day that explained how Finnish scientists have invented a device that makes it harder to steal a mobile phone. So far, so good.
Now for the interesting partit does this by enabling the phone to detect a change in the owner's walking style. Upon detection, the phone would freeze, thereby preventing unauthorized use.
This certainly doesn’t stop the phone from being stolen. But it does stop a thief from running up a huge phone bill or accessing private records that may be stored on the phone.
According to representatives of the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, the phone would be equipped with sensors the measure certain characteristics of the user's gait. It would then monitor the walking style and check it against what's saved in memory. If the values differ, the user would be forced to enter a password into the system.
Sounds interesting technologically, but I think I'll pass.
