I recently witnessed a demo for an FM tuner. In this demo, the apps engineer put together what he called "apples to apples" side-by-side FM radios. There were actually three radios presenta high-end tuner, a Silicon Labs radio, and a Silicon Labs competitor.
When pulling in a relatively strong station, the three choices were pretty similar. The real difference came when the radios were each tuned to the same distant station. The Silicon Labs radio offered a slightly better sound than the high-end tuner, but a significantly better sound than the competitive radio.
I thought I'd seen enough canned demos in my time to smell a rat. Hence, I challenged the engineer, and the best solution we could come up with was for me to do my own test in my own lab. Lo and behold, I came away with the same results. So, my apologies to the apps engineer who I thought was trying to deceive me, and hats off to the engineering team for coming up with a quality tuner.
