I'm remiss to use the "eye of the storm" analogy, seeing as all the destruction we've had recently relating to hurricanes and tornados and so on. But in a literary kind of way, that's where I see the handset component market right now.
The reason for this is because we are now right between the two biggest handset tradeshows of the year, the 3GSM World Congress held last month in Barcelona, and the CTIA Wireless event, next month in Las Vegas.
It's at events like these that vendors tend to make their biggest announcements of the year. Hence, this period between the shows is relatively quiet, as is the case this year.
Because the two shows are held in locales far apart, the demos shown by the exhibitors tend to be same, with the assumption that few people travel to both events. So for the rare few, such as yours truly, we have to work to look for demos we haven't seen before.
One issue that popped up in Barcelona was that some of the expected demos got held up in customs, and in a few cases, never even made it to the show. So for those vendors, attendees will be seeing the demos for the first time.
