Virus are spreading to mobile handsets, yet no one seems to be doing anything about it. Thanks to McAfee, that should be changing.
I continually hear how virus are being spread to mobile handsets, yet no one seems to be doing anything about it. Well, that should be almost no one. McAfee is one vendor that seems to be on the forefront of handset protection (as I stated a few months ago in Make sure your handset is protected).
McAfee has come up with an automated online virus scanning tool for the Symbian Signed mobile application certification program. The program authenticates and tests third-party applications against industry-agreed quality guidelines. Thanks to this new tool, the program includes virus scanning to provide additional confidence to both users and network operators.
Symbian claims that over 70 million smartphones have shipped with its operating system and the number of commercially available applications I snow over 5300. During the second half of 2006, all applications and content submitted for Symbian Signed certification will automatically be scanned using the McAfee anti-virus engine before being passed on to the certification stage. Virus scanning as part of the application certification submission process continues to demonstrate Symbian Signed thought leadership and its best practice approach to mobile application development.
I would definitely say that this is a step in the right direction.
