According to a recent report from Forward Concepts, DSP shipments in the second quarter are up 14.7% over the same quarter last year. Compared to the first quarter of this year, DSP shipments are up 3.1%. Dollar volume for the second quarter is $2.1 billion.
The majority of those processors went to the mobile handset segment.. However, the report points out that the increase in that segment is only 2.8%. More dramatic gains were seen in the automotive and consumer markets.
Geographically speaking, DSP shipments (revenue) to the Americas (mostly the US) dropped 14.5%, leading to a global market share drop to 9.4%. That comes as somewhat of a surprise to me. With the majority of handsets designed outside the US, I would have expected the slowdown to similarly come from outside the US.
