For the first time, Google saw a surge in computer-based Web surfing during the traditional slow months of summer. Citing traffic to maps, email, and mobile searches on mobile phones and wireless handhelds, Google VP of search products Marissa Mayer says there was a 35% increase.
What did iPhone have to do with it? A lot. There was a jump of 40 to 50 percent in Google Maps usage from mobile phones following the launch of iPhone.
Now that kids in the U.S. are back to school, there should be another surge from cell phone usage--until the teachers begin taking them away again, that is.
