A new program at the Port of Long Beach in California caused widespread congestion. More than 1,500 trucks were turned away from terminal gates on the first day for failing to have proper electronic RFID tags, reports the Dailybreeze.com.
The mega ports approved Clean Truck Program in the fall, which banned pre-1989 diesel engine trucks and pre-1994 trucks on Jan. 1, 2010, completing the transition by banning all by January 2012, for those 2006 and older.
The ports began using RFID to control access, charging $35 per 20-foot container unit, Feb. 18. In some instances the RFID didn't work, and many long traffic jams resulted.
An estimated 15% of drivers were denied access to the ports because they did not have the required Clean Truck Program RFID tag, according to the Daily Breeze.
