I'm torn. I really like the fact that I've read just about all of these books (including the ones for younger readers) because that way I know how everything links in with everything else... On the other hand I really envy someone who is reading these for the first time, because there is so much to learn and so many laughs to be had...

Is anyone else a fan, or is it just me? Also, if you are a fan, have you read the three "Johnny Maxwell" titles, which I also really enjoyed?

Good Grief – I almost forgot to mention that today is September 25th, which is “Wear the Lilac Day” for Discworld fans around the world to commemorate Terry Pratchett's writing and, with his diagnosis in 2007, to support research into Alzheimer's Disease (check it out here: http://bit.ly/lpgeIG)

I meant May 25th ... I have no idea where "September" came from...

Hello Max, I've also been a huge fan of the Discworld series ever since I received Equal Rites from the Science Fiction Book Club because I forgot to return my Featured Selections card. I enjoyed the book so much I purchased all the others already released, and have bought all the new ones as they were released. I also have several of his calendars and the Hogfather DVD. If you haven't seen the DVD I highly recommend it. I just need to buy the rest some time. And yes, the 40 or so books I have do take up some space on my bookshelf. I ended up buying some of his collections, like Rincewind the Wizard, so I can lend them out to family members for their enjoyment. Anyway, take care and have a great day. Cheers, Ralph

I did see the Hogfather DVD -- it was pretty good although it's hard for anything to be as good as the books. Have you read his Johnny Maxwell books? Also did you read Good Omens, which Terry co-authored with Neil Gaiman? (If not I highly recommend it)

I have read several of the discworld books. I have been a fan for quite a while. I am glad to see there is a list because I know I haven't read all of them yet. It will be nice to go pick up the ones I am missing. Good Omens is another very good book.

Have you read the three "Science of the Discworld" books? The combination of popular science and Discworld humour is fantastic. Incidentally, we are still in May, not September - I know you have a habit of writing your dates half-backwards on your side of the pond, but I'm sure the month names are the same!

Arrggghh -- I meant May 25th -- I have no idea where "September" came from -- and I'm British (I just happen to live in America) so I usually write dates the way the universe intended (DD/MM/YYYY) [grin]

Regarding date format, I am partial to the pattern YYYY/MM/DD. It appears more logical to reference an event from a global range to a narrow point in time. Just a personal preference when I write for myself.

Actually you are correct -- that's the way I organize all of my lower level folders on my computer - -the file name for each folder starts with the date in the form 2011-05-25 ... hey, it works for me :-)

YYYY/MM/DD is also used by the Japanese, as I found out when I had to make paperwork for one of our customers over there. Since then I've become rather fond of it as it makes sorting data so much more logical at times.

YYYYMMDD order is the most sensible order for many purposes, and is the ISO standard. In particular, it means that numerical, alphabetical and chronological ordering is always the same. DD/MM/YYYY order is also logical, and is natural in that it gives the most changeable detail first (just as we do with things like names and addresses, at least in the western world). But MM/DD/YYYY is just weird.

@David: But "MM/DD/YYYY is just weird." I agree -- so why did the Americans standardize on it ... there must have been some reason...

Near as I can tell, it's because it matches the long-form way of writing dates: "June 10, 2011" etc. I use YYYY.MM.DD(.HH.MM.SS)myself, since it makes chronological and alphabetical orders match.

I'm a huge Discworld fan also. While I love them all, the Watch and Susan Death series are my favourites. I'm working my way through all of them in audiobook form on my daily commute, and I find that it's been long enough that I am re-experiencing them for the first time. Nigel Planar is also a fantastic reader. I also loved the Discworld adventure games (old DOS games that they were), with Rincewind voiced by the inestimable Eric Idle. The newer made-for-tv Discworld movies have also been great hits, and I hear that the Night Watch will be getting its own BBC-made TV show. So much Discworld!

I'm such a huge Discworld fan that I go to the conventions in UK, USA, Ireland, Germany and Netherlands. Even worse (or better) I moved to Wincanton in Somerset which is formally twinned with Ankh-Morpork and has the world's only REAL as opposed to online shop, dedicated to Discworld and Terry's works. Check out Discworld Emporium and Hogswatch 2012 on facebook if you want to know more. If you are ever in the UK I can let you know what meetings are happening while you are here and just after July 4th 2013, the 3rd US Discworld Convention is taking place in Baltimore :) I saw the Ankh-Morpork map on Saturday and I heard some encouraging snippets about the 4 part Good Omens being made and also about possible cast members for The Watch (CSI Ankh-Morpork very unofficially!)

I was lucky enough to be an extra on Colour of Magic and quite a few friends were in Going Postal. We are hoping they are going to need many ankh-morpork citizens to make Unseen Academicals. If you want to send me an email, I will let you know what comes up like that from time to time. Kris
