Where in the US is it permitted for men to show their gluteal cleft while being illegal for women?
OK guys, I am talking to you for a minute. What do you think of when I say cleavage? Well, this is a decent publication so I won’t go into it, but I am sure you are all thinking exactly the same thing. I bet some of you have a little of your own although you don’t want to admit it and you will do everything you can to hide it. But what if there was an even playing field where both men and women could do it equally. And if you did, then you may just need a license to patent 6,473,908 “Garment having a buttocks cleavage revealing feature”. I kid you not. With this patent you are allowed, even encouraged, to show off your plumber’s crack, your builders bum or your gluteal cleft. When researching this piece I was amazed to find out on Wikipedia that The Cincinnati Enquirer had called it “the new cleavage” and The Sun claims that bums are the new ‘you get the picture’.
With so much on display that was never meant to be, how can a patent claim it? Well, it discloses a garment having a buttocks covering portion and a buttocks cleavage-revealing portion disposed at the buttocks covering portion. The buttocks cleavage-revealing portion is an opening and see-through material is disposed at the opening. The garment is a pant having leg portions depending from a waist, and the opening is disposed below the waist.
The patentee, one Thomas A. Bontems and assigned to the U.S. Department of Energy – I kid you not, claims that people wear clothing as a reflection of their attitudes and personalities. While some do it with tight pants or low cut clothing, others find these uncomfortable. As a result, what is needed is a garment that is comfortable to wear, easy to make, inexpensive and that incorporates a revealing feature that does not detract from or govern the overall structure of the garment.
So, while you need a license for butt cleavage in pants, many celebrities prefer to do it other ways. Thanks to the Sun again (May 2nd 2013), they provided a glimpse into this fashion trend.
Now, you may want to be careful if you live in Yakima, Washington. They passed a law a few years back that makes it illegal to show “cleavage of the buttocks” and you can face a fine of $750 or thrown in jail for 90 days. If a child under 14 sees you, then it increases to $3000 fine and 1 year in the slammer. But here is the really sexist part: it only applies to women. So men, here is your chance to show some cleavage where women aren’t allowed to!
