The current trend in embedded systems is towards "getting out of the box", i.e. the system is getting more smarter. The vast availability of hardware & software resources ( thanks to the open-source revolution ) has made integration of technologies like USB, Networking support,Graphic support & Internet support to an embedded system. So, an 8-bit system is no longer "shy" to talk with other devices on the internet or a local network. The processors being used boast of Nano Watt power consumption, besides integrating Digital Signal Processing capabilities or a Graphic controller capabilities. The trend thus appears to be moving towards more smart, efficient & compact systems. The article should have talked about such trends rather than about the application areas of embedded application.
