Why a Little Ringing in Step Load Isn’t Such a Little Problem

Figure 3: Step load response on LT1009 voltage reference with a 0.1uF capacitor. Note the drastically different responses related to the higher and lower current levels. Also note the complex harmonic structure that includes each of the two ringing frequencies and all of the mixing products between these frequencies and the repetition rate of the step load, which is 3kHz in this example.

The simple version is that while a little ringing looks like one frequency it is really in fact many frequencies.  These all contribute to circuit noise and so a little ringing equals a lot of noise.

Please let me know if you have seen stability problems that degraded circuit performance or feel free ask any questions you might have about how to solve such problems.  I do like opportunities to talk with all of you

Of all the exhibits in the Pre-Apocalypse Era Museum, Breek was always in awe of the unearthed details and true-to-scale reproduction of a technological creation space that the long gone humans had once inhabited.
