Solar PV modules and inverters see bumps in the road while a series of all-day technical power seminars get underway in Europe. New products include SiC Schottky diodes, miniature SIP AC/DC modules, and a 2.25-MHz synchronous dual-output buck regulator.
A report from research firm GlobalData forecasts that solar photovoltaic (PV) module installations worldwide are expected to fall to 24.5 GW in 2013 from a peak of 30.25 GW in 2012 before returning to stable growth from 2014 through 2020. The reduction is seen as a result of reduced government support in countries such as Spain, Italy, and Germany, with the latter being the largest consumer of solar modules in 2012.
Solar PV module installations are forecast to fall slightly in 2013 from the level seen in 2012 due to reduced government support in several countries before resuming stable growth from 2014 onward.
On a similar note, market research firm IHS recently reported that worldwide shipments of solar PV inverters declined by 5 percent year-over-year in the second quarter -- the first decline since the third quarter of 2011. In its report -- "The World Market for PV Inverters - 2013 Edition" -- the firm notes that a sharp slowdown in the European market was the primary cause. Inverter shipments are projected to increase in the second half of 2013, with most of the growth coming from the Americas and Asia.
A series of worldwide technical power seminars by Fairchild Semiconductor will begin this month in Europe and will include 13 cities in the Americas and four in Asia in 2014. The theme of the series is "Engineering Energy Efficiency" and the one-day seminars will focus on technologies and techniques on such topics as LLC resonant converter design issues, driving HB-LEDs, current shaping strategies for buck PFC, improving flyback design performance, and packaging for optimum efficiency and size in low-voltage DC-DC applications.
New products this week include two new series of silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky diodes from IXYS. The 600V/10A SS150 series and 1200V/5A SS275 series are available in DE150 and DE275 surface-mount packages, respectively.
CUI Inc. has introduced a series of miniature encapsulated SIP-packaged AC/DC power supply modules. Available in 1-, 3-, and 5-W families, the PBK series measures as small as 1.38 x 0.43 x 0.94 in. and offers single output voltages of 3.3, 5, 9, 12, 15, and 24 Vdc.
Finally, Linear Technology announced a dual 600mA 15V monolithic synchronous step-down DC/DC regulator featuring a constant 2.25MHz switching frequency. The LTC3607 operates from a 4.5V to 15V input and has a quiescent current of only 55µA.
