The TI Sitara AM335x industrial software development kit (SDK) has just received a boost with the addition of support for the EtherNet/IP protocol.
The EtherNet/IP protocol provides modifications for industrial applications, since standard Ethernet, a deterministic protocol, cannot guarantee the real-time operation required by applications such as process and motor control. Adding the protocol makes it easier to manage production schedules efficiently, minimize inventory costs, and integrate and optimize business-based functions. The protocol, compatible with 802.3 and TCP/IP, communicates seamlessly with real-time industrial applications, providing a communications bridge between the enterprise and factory floor.
The addition of EtherNet/IP to the PROFIBUS and EtherCAT protocol support enables OEMs that can tap into production-ready software to get to market faster with industrial sensors, drives, IO devices, and PLCs.

In addition to seamless information flow across multiple networks, other benefits include coherent integration of IO control, device configuration and data collection, the implementation of multilayer networks without multiple layers of complexity, and the ability to choose between products with low integration cost.
OEMs can design scalable solutions with one printed circuit board based on the Sitara AM335x processors and change the protocol software in the processor's programmable real-time unit (PRU) based on system requirements.

The SDK and the PRU software feature a simple licensing structure without upfront licensing fees or per-unit royalty reporting. The Sitara AM335x industrial SDK ships with TI's industrial communications engine (ICE) 2 board and is available today for $179. It is compatible with the original ICE board as well as TI's Industrial Development Kit (IDK).
