Very amusing, Max.  I would suggest that perhaps Sheffield, like many cities, considers itself to be "The World" so perhaps your new description is not as grand as it seems at first glance.  Of course, as a Yank I don't know anything about Sheffield except for seeing it as the location in The Full Monty (1997) and noting that people there speak "a rum sort of lingo", as Maj. Giles Flack would say.

By the way, the car in the photo is a Toyota iQ (sold as a Scion in the States), not a Smart car.  Your wonderful description of maternal driving reminds me of Trevanian's Shibumi (1979).  The hero owns a Volvo, but hates the way it runs.  So he punishes the car by letting his always-partially-inebriated gardener drive the car.  The gardener can't figure out how to get the car out of first gear, so it makes an awful racket when he drives it.  This is a good thing because it gives other people in the road a chance to jump over hedges, etc., as per your description.  The Volvo is so well built that it survives this abuse, and keeps on running -- badly.

Can you post a link to the entire article?  I bet there's true comedic gold hidden in there :-)

I guess I'm also going to need a new wardrobe for all of the television shows to which I will doubtless be invited. I'd better call my Hawaiian shirt manufacturer and get them to start ramping up a third shift :-)

Funny you should say that. I remember when I first moved to Alabama from the UK 23 years ago. I would watch the 10:00pm evening news. The first 25 minutes were about happenings in Huntsville, Alabama. Then the announcer would say something like "And now for 5 minutes of news from the rest of the world..." This would be followed by something like "In Ohio today..."

And I would think "That's not the rest of the world, you plonker, it's just the rest of America" -- but over the years I grew to realize that as far as a large proportion of the audience was concerned, these two terms are synonymous (LOL)

That was a great (if bitter-sweet) film and very true-to-life in many ways. Sheffield used to be a huge Iron & Steel city -- I remember when the industry went away and so many people were out of work...

The EETimes community has long known you were the go2 techno guy. Glad to see the civilian populations in the UK catching on. Now, if you could only get the rest of the world (ie, Huntsville, AL) to recognize you properly...

I hang my head in shame. To be honest I'm not a "Car Guy" -- In fact, I actually thought the term "Smart car" was generic like "Smartphone" -- I didn;t realize it referred to a particular make (that's how little I know).

But I have to say that my mom is delighted with (what I now understand to be) her Toyota iQ :-)

Not sure a ticker tape parade a good idea. Ticker tape is soooo 20th century. Stock quotes all in electronic form, now. So at best the present day equivalent of ticker tape would be a shower of electrons, and if too enthusiastic it would be a lightning bolt.

Better stick with getting the key to the city or lifetime free parking or a statue in the town park or something like that.

You know, I might have suspected that your trip "home" had some hidden reason (besides seeing your mom, which I might add is a noble purpose in its own). Now we know... Great inside picture of you - why with all your pull didn't it appear page one above the fold???

In any case, it's nice to know that I know the "World's go-to" geek. I'm going to give MY 80-something mom YOUR number now.
