Up to 60 countries involved in some way, that truly is international cooperation. At the same time, the long-awaited and very important step is that of commercial space systems, which are apparently starting to appear as is the case with SpaceX. That may be the best way to break from reliance on the multiple space agencies from multpile countries which, while a great sign of international cooperation, must be cumbersome in some ways.

I was fairly surprised at the number of agencies that have contributed. That kind of collaboration seems like it would be completely impossible based off of the typical government security stances.

@Caleb,

It would be great if you can throw some light on the Space station features and may be compare them to what we have seen in the movie "Gravity".

There have been many comments criticizing the technical errors in that movie . With your first hand interaction with space engineers you can throw more light on these technicalities.

That would be fun. I haven't seen the movie yet though, I'll have to just take their word for it!

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
