With regard to the "Man coming out of a manhole" in the second photograph, I tend to forget it's there, but there have been several occasions when I've looked up to see someone walking into my office -- and they've glanced down and gasped and leapt back out of the office again and I've thought "what's wrong with them?" before I've realized what's happened (I can't see the man on the floor from my desk when I'm sitting down).

With regard to the ceramic tin cans shown in picture #12, the reason I'm interested in ceramics at the moment is that one of my (many) background hobby projects is to make a mosiac -- and part of this is that I'm making my own ceramic tiles (see my blog There *is* a man in the moon!)

The last time I stopped by to visit, you mentioned that a professional organizer was going to put things in their proper place. I was very concerned that your office (excuse me- Pleasuredome) would get de-Maxified, but I an greatly relieved to see that she totally failed in her mission (aside from the walkable area being a bit wider).

What do you think the archaeologists will think when they discover your office a thousand years in the future? They're going to have a field day with this one!

Is the ASR33 merrily typing away yet?

@Rcurl: The last time I stopped by to visit...

When are you coming up here again? I have so many cool things to show you. Also Mock Electronics is closing down in the New Year -- I'm sure they are bringing all sorts of stuff over from their Decatur building -- we need to go down there for a wander to check it out...

Say it ain't so! Mock has been around since as far back as I can remember. Got to get by there, pay my final respects, and help relieve them of some of their excess stuff!

Why not come round to my office this coming Friday and we can drive down there together (that way I can make sure you don't snaffle all the good stuff :-)

@Max - "Mock Electronics is closing down in the New Year".   That sounds like very sad news.    Don'cha hate it when you just discover somewhere like that and they go and close down?  If I was you I'd be heartbroken.....  why is this happening, do you know?  It sounded like they had lots of tasty stuff and there are a few guys like you (and Rick) around to patronise them?  I wish I was not so far away, I'd come and help relieve them of some stuff too....

@David: That sounds like very sad news.

There's certainly a little tear rolling down my cheek. I think the owners just want to retire, and there simply isn't enough business to make it attractive enough to stay. I'm going to email them to tell them Rick and I are coming down, so to get theit best stuff out :-)

I had to read this twice -- I think over here it might be better to say "throwing everything over" or "giving everything up" ... LOL

I know just what you mean -- the thought of offering to take over had crossed my mind (of course, I use the term "mind" in the loosest sense) also...

You should get the old BBC Quatermass episodes playing on those old TVs.

Hi Max.

I "luv" reading your articles. They bring pleasure here in this presumably ones and zeros World! But couldn't you upload images of your books, for us to see what kind of books you have in your Pleasure Dome? I could do the same and so we all could have a look at, what each others are reading or have been reading. This was just a thought, but carry on with what you do :-)

Kind regards,

Simon Lynge

Why, thank you so much for your kind words. That's a great idea -- a "what's on your bookself?" column .... I'll show you mine if you show me yours, type thing.

I will add this to my "list of things to do" -- but I'm out of the office all next week -- I won't have any form of access to the Internet for the whole week, so I'll do this the week I get back.

Now THAT'S an office!

There's so many cool and interesting things I don't even know where to start.  But one thing I couldn't quite figure out is why you have a keyboard in front of each of the three monitors on the right side of your desk.  You mentioned those monitors were connected to a tower computer under the desk, but the only thing I can think of is that you're running a couple virtual machines.  But if that's the case, does that mean you find it more efficient to have several single monitor computers rather than one computer with multiple monitors?

Thanks so much for sharing! It's really neat to see where you work.  The only point of particular interest in my office is a really neat old sketch of a locamotive that crashed into a river after the bridge it was crossing buckled.  On the remaining part of the bridge is a group of engineers looking down with a caption that reads "Oh Shit".  It's my personal motivational poster to not be "those" guys.

@Clarke: ...one thing I couldn't quite figure out is why you have a keyboard in front of each of the three monitors on the right side of your desk.

In fact I have a keyboard and mouse in front of each screen -- my desk is curved and my chair spins, so I can spin back and forth between monitors to look straignt on at the one I wantto address -- having a keyboard and mouse already in front of the screen is a lot easier than dragging one around with me (or stretching back to reach a fixed one)

I realize this is an old post, but the multiple keyboard remark reminded me of long ago when the New Zealand "Big Boat," KZ-1 (the one that lost the 1988  America's Cup to the American catamaran Stars and Stripes (US-1)), came to Annaplolis, MD for a visit. It was on a barge, as were several other shacks which held computers displaying various things.  In one shack I saw a keyboard and started to laugh out loud:  it was posed in front of a microwave oven!  The flat, black glass front could pass for a monitor if you didn't notice the keypad.

Nice touch, a joke to separate the geeks from the gawkers. ;-)

Yes, I have a picture somewhere, but it was before digital cameras (or at least my posession of one), so it's somewhere in an envelope of prints and film.

@max: I too realize this was an old post; however, it was brought (again) to my attention by @stargxer's appearance in the Most Recent Comments section.  Why is your "welcome mat" backwards?  Normally I would expect it to face the the OUTSIDE so visitors could recognize your turf!  I do assume you don't need to be reminded of your name....

It IS on the outside; maybe he quickly photoshopped it?  You can see the Man With The Man-hole inside the door.

I have a feeling there wasn't room for the ASR-33 inside the office ... and he may have been displaying it to be bragging about having one!  Put some walnut panels on it and maybe some paisley wallpaper on the other parts and ... et voilà! ... Steampunk!
